Hinckley (David) House is built.
1820
[1810] Built for the Boston merchant, the large, granite, double house is located on the former site of the Rev. James Allen House at 1 Somerset Street and 7 Beacon Street. After Hinckley’s death in 1825, the Somerset side is passed on to his daughter, then purchased by Benjamin Crowninshield in 1832, then by the Somerset Club for its first headquarters in 1852. The Beacon Street side is purchased by John Lowell Gardner Sr. and briefly occupied by Isabella Stewart Gardner. The entire building is purchased by the American Congregational Association in 1871, then by the Houghton & Dutton department store. It is demolished in 1904.
