Haymarket Theatre opens.
December 26, 1796
It is located at today’s 175 Tremont Street. The second theater built in Boston, it is one of the largest buildings in the town and features three tiers of boxes, a gallery, pit, and drawing rooms. It opens with a performance of Mrs. Cowley’s The Belle’s Stratagem and the ballet pantomime Mirz and Lindor. James Dickinson and Thomas Cooper make their first Boston appearances here. The building is badly damaged by fire on February 2, 1798. It closes in March 1803 and is torn shortly thereafter. A new theater is built on the site in 1889.*
