Hayden Jr. (Robert) is born in New Bedford.

The son of Robert Sr. and Josephine (Hughes) Hayden, Robert Hayden receives degrees from Boston University, marries Charlene Roberts, and moves to Newton. He becomes teacher, an editor, director of the METCO program (1970-73), Boston public schools administrator, and then an historian focusing on African-American history in New England. Hayden dies on Martha’s Vineyard on January 23, 2022.
