Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1851. Hawthorne had sent his only copy of the manuscript from the Berkshires to the Boston publisher and it is temporarily lost in transit. Melville declares, “I shall not consent to the universe existing a moment longer. I have no copy of it.” But the manuscript is subsequently found and published.
