Harvard beats McGill University 3-0 in Cambridge.

May 14, 1874

The first intercollegiate football game in the Boston area, it is played at Jarvis Field on the site of today’s Harvard Law School. Harvard president Charles Eliot criticizes the new sport, however, declaring, “A game that needs to be watched is not fit for genuine sportsmen.” Eliot also disparages the game of baseball in 1875.* Harvard subsequently plays its football games at the South End Grounds and at Holmes Field in Cambridge. The college threatens to drop the sport completely in 1885,* but continues to field a team, moving to a new stadium in Allston in 1903.*
