Harry Houdini demonstrates his escape artistry in Boston.

May 1, 1908

Before a crowd of some 20,000 people, Houdini, wrapped in chains and manacles, jumps off the Harvard Bridge into the Charles River. Minutes later, he frees himself and rises to the surface. The stunt is performed to publicize his two-week appearance at the Keith Theatre.
