Hardwick, Elizabeth Hardwick. “Boston: A Lost Ideal.”
November 25, 1959
Harper’s. In it she writes, “Boston – wrinkled, spindly-legged, depleted of nearly all her spiritual and cutaneous oils, provincial, self-esteeming – has gone on spending and spending her inflated bills of pure reputation, decade after decade. Now, one supposes it is over at last.” She also criticizes the city’s “dying downtown shopping section” and “feckless, ugly, municipal neglect.”
