Convicted of “Adultery by her owne confession,” Newell is sentenced to receive “Fifteen stripes Severally to be laid on upon her naked back at the Common Whipping post.” Her lover, Lambert Despar, is given 25 lashes and sentenced to “stand upon the Pillory for the space of the full hower with Adultery in Capitall letters written upon his brest.”
