Gravity Railroad is built.
1803
Built according to some accounts by Silas Whitney and others by Messrs. Sargent or Hunt, it runs from roughly from today’s 29 Charles Street up to the corner of Louisburg Square and Pinckney Street. The first railroad in the U.S., it is operates by means of a large pulley that enables cars loaded with gravel at the top of the hill to descend and simultaneously pull cars that have been emptied back up the hill.
