Gov. Francis Bernard leaves Boston on board the Rippon.

August 1, 1769

The Boston Gazette calls Bernard “A Scourge to this Province, a Curse to North-America, and a Plague to the whole Empire.” The town celebrates Bernard’s departure with the flying of flags, the shooting of cannon – all of which he is forced to watch, since the lack of wind forces the ship to wait in harbor for three days, until August 4, 1769.
