George Wright Golf Course is dedicated.

April 21, 1939

Named for the former baseball player and sporting goods store manager, it designed by Donald Ross, built by the Works Progress Administration , and located on the former Grew estate at 420 West Street. The land was acquired by the Boston Parks Department in 1930. Mayor Maurice Tobin officially opens the course by hitting a 200-yard drive off the first tee, but the course had been open to the public since 1938. The land on which the 18-hole, 6,700-yard course was built had been part of the Boston park system in 1930. When James Michael Curley, a non-golfer, subsequently succeeds Tobin as mayor, he threatens to sell the golf course land to housing developers, but later relents.
