General Court settles a breach of promise case.

August 1, 1633

Alexander Becke gains some satisfaction after having been jilted. In the first breach of promise case in the British Colonies, the court orders “that Joyce Broadwicke shall give unto Alex. Becke the sum twenty shillings, for promiseing him marriage without her friend’s consent, and nowe refusing to perform this same.”
