Gen. Thomas Gage orders the House of Representatives to recess and reassemble in Salem.
May 28, 1774
Samuel Adams, Cushing, and Hancock protest “the removal of the Assembly from the Court-House in Boston, its ancient and only convenient seat,” in a letter on June 9, 1774. Gage subsequently appoints 36 men to the previously elected Council. Twelve of the so-called “Mandamus Councilors” refuse to serve, and a number of the others subsequently resign under pressure from the Sons of Liberty.
