French ship sails into Boston Harbor.

June 11, 1643

[12-Winthrop] Under the command of Charles de la Tour, the French Huguenot governor of Acadia, the ship sails unchallenged into the harbor because the fort at Castle Island is no longer being maintained. de la Tour lands at Governors Island and meets with Gov. John Winthrop, who allows him to come ashore in Boston, buy provisions, and charter ships for his expedition to resolve a dispute over territory in Nova Scotia. But Winthrop refuses to offer the French military assistance. The ship leaves Boston on July 24, 1643 (OS-7/14).
