Franklin Roosevelt is elected president of the United States.

Roosevelt (D) defeats incumbent Herbert Hoover (R). In Boston, thousands of people fill “Newspaper Row” to watch as the election returns are posted on chalk board. Roosevelt wins 67.1% of the vote in Boston, the highest percentage of any major city in the country, and slightly higher than the percentage received by Al Smith in Boston in 1928. Roosevelt becomes the first president inaugurated on March 4th.
