First Lutheran Church in Boston (first) is dedicated.
December 25, 1847
Also known as the Zion Lutheran Church, it is located at 296 Shawmut Avenue. The oldest Lutheran church in New England, the congregation was established on February 18, 1839 and met previously in the Franklin School and Boylston Hall. The congregation moves to a new building (second) on West Newton Street in 1899,* then to the current church (third) in the Back Bay in 1957.* The Shawmut Avenue building subsequently becomes the home of the Sahara Syrian Restaurant, which closes in 1970.
