Originally The Federalist, the first of the 85 essays authored under the pen name Publius appears initially in two New York newspapers and they are subsequently reprinted throughout the country until August 1788. Written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, they are meant to promote ratification of U.S. Constitution recently drafted in Philadelphia.
