Federal court upholds the temporary Boston exam schools admissions policy.
April 15, 2021
U.S. District Court judge William Young rules that the change to base admissions on grades and allocate them by Zip code “does not have the effect of subjecting students to discrimination because of their race.” In his ruling, Young writes, “Viewing everything through the prism of race is both myopic and endlessly divisive. . . . Geographic and socioeconomic diversity are appropriate educational goals in their own right, regardless of race.” A federal appeals court refuses to hear the case two weeks later and the Supreme Court refuses to hear the case in 2024.
