Exchange Coffee House (first) is built.
1809
[1804-Drake] Architect: Asher Benjamin. Built by banking speculator Andrew Dexter, it is located at today’s 15 – 21 Congress Street. The tallest building in Boston at the time, it includes a business exchange as well as the most luxurious hotel in the U.S. Although its dining and reading rooms prove popular, neither the exchange nor the hotel prove successful. The building is sold at auction after Dexter’s banks fail, and it is destroyed by a spectacular fire in 1818.* It is replaced by a new building (second) on the same site in 1822.*
