Equal Rights Amendment is first introduced to Congress in Washington, D.C.

Drafted by Alice Paul, the proposed legislation declares, “Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction.” After failing to win support, it is introduced in every session of Congress until it is passed in 1972.*
