EMC Corporation is established in Newton.

Founded by Richard Egan and Roger Merino, the data storage company becomes one of the largest of its kind in the world. Egan, who grew up in Dorchester and graduated from Boston Technical High School and Northeastern University, becomes one of the state’s richest men. The company is purchased by Dell Technologies in 2016.
