A Rhode Island resident known as Deerfoot among his Narragansett tribe, he outduels Johnny Kelley “The Elder” on comes to be known as Heartbreak Hill, after Boston Globe sports reporter Jerry Nason writes, “[Brown] broke Kelley’s Heart” on the last of the course’s hills. Brown wins the race again in 1939.*
