Edward Cohen is shot and killed inside the Massachusetts State House.
December 5, 1907
The president of the American Federation of Labor, Cohen was waiting outside the governor’s office to see Gov. Curtis Guild. In the only murder committed inside of the State House in Massachusetts history, he is shot by John Steele, an Everett resident recently released from a Danvers mental hospital, who may have mistaken Cohen for the Gov. Guild. A plaque in Cohen’s memory created by Meredith Bergmann is dedicated on September 23, 2009.
