Edmund Andros is sworn in as royal governor of the Dominion of New England.

December 20, 1686

After arriving at Long Wharf aboard the Kingfisher, the former governor of New York is met by a delegation that escorts him to the Town House for the swearing-in ceremony. Tactless and unpopular, Sir Edmund imposes higher taxes, forces landowners to pay a fee to retain their land, limits citizen’s freedom for travel, restricts the number of town meetings only to the annual March meeting for electing officials, and declares Native American signatures on land titles to be “of no more worth than the scratch of a bear’’ paw.” Andros is deposed in 1689.*
