Eben Jordan opens his first dry goods store.

1842

[1841] The store is located at 168 Hanover Street. Jordan is assisted in opening the store by merchant Joshua Stetson, and, although initially a wholesale operation, it becomes a retail operation when Jordan sells a yard of cherry-colored cloth to his friend Louisa Bareiss later in the year [1861-MM]. He sells the store in 1848, goes to work for dry goods merchant J.M. Beebe, and then opens a store in partnership with Charles Marsh in 1851.*
