Draft riot occurs in New York City.

Thousands of residents protest the recently-enacted draft law. The riot includes the destruction of property and attacks against African-American citizens. The next day, the Boston Herald contrasts the mood in Massachusetts, writing, “The draft is received in this State without the faintest show of opposition, so far as we have learned . . .” But a riot occurs in Boston two days later.*
