Dr. Osamu Shimomura is awarded the Nobel Prize.

A marine biologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and an adjunct professor at Boston University School of Medicine, the 80-year-old Falmouth resident is awarded the prize in chemistry for discovering a green fluorescent protein in jellyfish that enables scientists to see how proteins move and interact in cells. He shares the award with two other scientists, from Columbia University and University of California, San Diego, who built on his work.
