Doyle’s is robbed.

May 1, 1964

Two men pistol-whip bartender Tom McDonough, shoot a patron, and make off with $206 from the cash register. As they attempt to flee in a car driven by a compatriot, however, bar owner Bill Doyle, a former policeman, shoots one of them four times, prompting subsequent owner Gerry Burke to later note, “Bill Doyle had a well-deserved reputation for being very frugal and the story goes that they were the only four shots he ever gave away for ‘nuthin’.”
