Dole (James) is born in Jamaica Plain.
September 27, 1877
The son of Rev. and Mrs. Charles Doyle, James Dole grows up at 14 Roanoke Avenue, and graduates from Roxbury Latin School, and Harvard College. He establishes a small pineapple farm and cannery in Hawaii in 1899, then founds the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in December 1901. By 1930, the renamed Dole Pineapple Company operates the largest pineapple farm and cannery in the world and Dole comes to be called “The Pineapple King.” He is forced to relinquish control of his company in 1932. Dole dies in Honolulu on May 20, 1958.
