April 24, 1847

Susan Dimock comes to Boston in 1866 to study medicine at the New England Hospital for Women and Children. After being refused admission to Harvard Medical School because of her gender, she graduates from the University of Zurich, and returns to Boston to become chief surgeon and resident physician at the New England Hospital for Women on August 20, 1872. She wins praise for being “Thoroughly scientific in her work and yet remain a lady,” and is considered one of the finest surgeons in Boston. On a trip to Europe, Dimock dies in a shipwreck near the Scilly Islands off the coast of Cornwall, England, on May 8, 1875. Her remains are found and returned to Boston and, after a funeral on June 4, 1875,* she is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery.
