April 23, 1971

(& 4/24) Hundreds of Vietnam veterans protest the war by throwing their medals over a fence at the Capitol Building. Later in the day, John Kerry, 27, testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington. In opposing U.S. involvement in Vietnam, the 27-year-old Navy and Vietnam veteran ask, “. . . how do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam? How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?” Kerry testifies in the same room again in 2013.* The next day, some 400,000 people protest in the largest demonstration against the conflict to date.
