Demonstration is held in Boston in the wake of the recent riot in Detroit.

July 1, 1943

More than 3,000 people attend an “Interracial Unity” rally at the Boston Arena in the wake of two days of rioting in Detroit that began on June 20, 1943, and led to more than 30 deaths and the summoning of federal troops. At the Boston rally, Boston Branch NAACP president Julian Steele expresses hope for restraint in Boston, but protests segregation in the city’s public housing developments and calls for the teaching of Afro-American history in its schools and colleges and improved coverage by the local media of racial issues.
