Custom House Tower is dedicated.

January 22, 1915

Architect: Peabody & Stearns. Designed in the Greek Revival style and built above its predecessor 1847 building, it is located at 3 McKinley Square. One of the first structural steel-framed buildings in the U.S., it is the tallest building in New England until construction the of the Travelers tower in Hartford in 1919, and the tallest in Boston until 1947.* Construction began in 1913 and was allowed only because federally-owned buildings were not subject to the city’s 125-foot height limit. An observation deck is located on the 26th floor. The clock begins operating on April 6, 1916. Its 22-foot diameter face is the largest in the U.S. at the time. Declared surplus property by the federal government in 1986, it is purchased by the city on April 16, 1987, then by the Marriott Hotel Company and converted to hotel use by Jung/Brannen Associates in 1997.*
