Continental Army is established in Philadelphia.

Created by the Second Continental Congress, it is made up of local militias under federal control. George Washington is unanimously voted to be the commander of what is the predecessor of the U.S. Army the next day, and he is commissioned commander-in-chief on June 19, 1775.
