Commonwealth of Massachusetts is established.

Declared the first governor, John Hancock proclaims “God save the Commonwealth of Massachusetts” before the General Court in the Council Chamber of the Old State House. After stepping out onto the balcony of the building to greet the crowd gathered below, the governor and members of the General Court then proceed to the First Church in Boston (‘the Old Brick”) for a religious service.
