Columbus Day is first celebrated in Boston.

October 14, 1876

The day (first celebrated in the U.S. in 1792) is subsequently celebrated in Boston by a parade, which is taken over by the city in 1912, interrupted during World War I, then held alternately in the North End and East Boston beginning in 1919. The day is made a Massachusetts holiday in 1911, a national holiday celebrated on October 12 in 1934, and then on the second Monday in October in 1971. A change in the holiday sparks a controversy in Boston in 2021.*
