Codman (Ernest) is born in Boston.

December 30, 1869

The son of William and Elizabeth Codman, Ernest Codman graduates from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, and goes on to become a noted shoulder surgeon and crusader for higher medical standards and record keeping. Dissatisfied with medical procedures at Massachusetts General Hospital, he opens his own hospital in 1911,* creates a controversy in Boston medical circles in 1915.* Codman dies on November 23, 1940 and is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Two weeks before his death, trustees at MGH, which had begun to adopt his ideas, pass a resolution calling Codman “[A] champion of truth . . .willing to sacrifice personal place and standing to achieve what he believed to be right.”
