City Point Iron Works is established.

Originally Loring’s Works, it is founded by Harrison Loring. The company initially builds naval cruisers and tugboats for the federal government. During the Civil War, it produces iron-clad vessels and monitors for the Union Army. Other ironworks and machine shops in the area at this time are the Bay State Iron Works, Cyrus Alger Iron Works, John Souther’s Globe Iron Works, Hawes and Hersey, the Gray and Woods Machine Company, and Chubbuck and Sons.
