Christmas is banned in Massachusetts.
December 25, 1659
[1651-BG] General Court bans any celebration of Christmas. The court orders, “Whoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like (profane superstitious custom), shall pay for every such offense a fine of 5 shillings.” The ban is repealed in 1681. Christmas is made a legal holiday in Massachusetts in 1856.
