Chickering & Sons Piano Company is established.

February 15, 1823

Originally Stewart & Pickering and founded by Jonas Pickering and James Stewart, it is located at today’s 32 Tremont Street. The partnership dissolves and Chickering moves the shop to 416 Washington Street in 1829, partners with John Mackay, then goes into business with his three sons and builds a factory (first) on Washington Street in 1837,* and then another (second) in 1853.* The company produces the first pianoforte in the U.S. in 1823, its first upright piano in 1830, its first grand piano in 1833, becomes the largest manufacturer of pianos in the U.S. building 10,000 a year by 1850. It becomes Chickering & Sons in 1852, is purchased by the American Piano Company in 1908, moves to Rochester, N.Y. in 1928 and goes bankrupt in the 1980s.
