Chase & Sanborn Company is established.

Founded by Caleb Chase and James Sanborn as a coffee store, it becomes the first company in the U.S. to ship ground coffee in sealed tins in 1878 and is described as “the largest importing and distributing tea and coffee house in the United States” in 1892. It is acquired by Standard Brands in 1929 and Nabisco in 1981.
