Charlestown urban renewal plan public hearing is held.

January 7, 1963

More than 1,000 residents attend what is later described as a “tumultuous” meeting at the Edwards Middle School. Many are members of the Self Help Organization-Charlestown. According to Langley Keyes Jr, after the meeting SHOC president Gene Hennessey tells Boston Redevelopment Authority director that to gain the organization’s approval a plan must include “the El’s removal, a comprehensive renewal plan for Charlestown, demonstration of rehabilitation’s economic feasibility, and a serious effort to inform all of Charlestown’s residents about the renewal plan.”
