Charles Street A.M.E. Church relocates to Roxbury.
April 9, 1939
The congregation celebrates the occasion by marching from its former home on Beacon Hill to the former All Souls Unitarian Church at 551 Warren Street. It is the second African-American church in the neighborhood. Rev. Walter Davis, who serves as minister from 1951 to 1974, is subsequently described by Robert Hayden as “One of Boston’s most colorful religious figures.”
