Charles River Speedway opens.

September 11, 1899

Architect: William Austin. Designed in the Shingle and Colonial Revival style, it is located at today’s 1420 – 1440 Soldiers Field Road. The complex includes a headquarters, superintendent’s residence, stables, and a one-mile harness track. Also included in an adjacent park designed by the Olmsted Brothers is a two-mile Charles River Velodrome bicycle track, a 1.75-mile carriage path, and a pedestrian promenade along the Charles River. The Speedway closes and is demolished to make way for Soldiers Field Road in the 1950s. The adjacent buildings are subsequently occupied by the Metropolitan District Commission until the 1990s, and redeveloped for commercial use in 2021.
