Charles Bulfinch leaves Boston for Washington, D.C.
January 31, 1818
(Jan.) Bulfinch had been appointed architect of the Capitol building by President James Monroe after meeting the president while on a trip to Washington to study hospital construction for his work to design the new Massachusetts General Hospital. He assumes responsibility for construction of the central area and original dome. Bulfinch retires from active life and returns to Boston in 1830.
