Charles Bulfinch is forced to declare bankruptcy.

1796

The bankruptcy is due to the failure of the Tontine Crescent projects, which fails due to poor economy, and to the Massachusetts legislature’s refusal to allow Bulfinch to incorporate. He later writes, “With what remorse have I looked back on these events . . . I found myself reduced to my personal exertions for support.” Bulfinch is jailed for failing to pay his debts in 1811.*
