Central Burying Ground is established.

September 1, 1756

It is added to Boston Common in 1839. Graves include those of British soldiers killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. As in many cemeteries of the era, markers are not necessarily set above the graves of those buried below. One unmarked grave is that of artist Gilbert Stuart, another of Charles Sprague, the so-called “banker-poet of Boston.” More than 900 bodies are disinterred and re-interred due to construction of the subway, beginning in 1895.
