Clap resigns rather than carry out what is described as an “odious” order from Gov. Sir Edmund Andros. A contemporary account praises Clap’s example, that “it might be seen that Religious and well disposed men might take upon them the calling of a souldier, without danger of hurting their morals or their good name.”
