Capen (Hopestill) House is built.

(ca.) [1714-Lyndon, 1717-Morgan] Designed in the Georgian style, it is located at 41 Union Street. The building serves as headquarters of Ebenezer Hancock, paymaster of the Colonial Army, during the Revolutionary War, and is purchased by Capen in the late 1700s. The Duke of Chartres lives on the second floor in 1797, earning his living by giving French lessons, eventually returning to France to become King Louis Philippe in 1830. Isaiah Thomas publishes the Massachusetts Spy on the third floor from 1771-1775. The building becomes a restaurant in 1826.*
