Byrd (Richard E.) is born in Winchester, Virginia.
October 25, 1888
The son of Richard and Eleanor (Flood) Byrd, Richard Byrd graduates from the U.S. Naval Academy, marries Marie Ames in 1915, and subsequently moves to 9 Brimmer Street. He enters the Aviation Services in 1917, and rises to the rank of admiral. With Floyd Bennett, he makes the first flight over the North Pole on May 9, 1926, and with three others he makes the first flight over the South Pole in 1929.* Byrd dies at his home in Boston on March 11, 1957, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
